The Shakespearean Festival on the Cheap

Enjoy your staycation in Cedar City on the cheap.  From now till August 29, the Shakespearean Festival will be holding its annual The Greenshow.  This is a free show held every Monday to Saturday at 7 PM on the green and courtyard surrounding the Adams Shakespearean Theatre.

If you would like to visit another production, tickets start at $23.  On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesday, there is a $2 discount given to youth, military, and seniors.  Asking for this discount before the order is purchased will secure the discount.  There are other discounts available.

Worried about the hotel bill?  Try camping for the weekend.  There are many camping facilities located in or near Cedar City to take advantage of.  Shop around, but KOA has a weekend stay with electricity, water hookups, and internet for $50.

Pack a cooler full of fruits and vegetables from the grocery store or farmers market in order to keep food costs down. Tinfoil dinners over a campfire can beat out any restaurant. For other camping and dutch oven recipes visit scoutorama.com.

Visit the Shakespearean Festival website for more information.

Check out many more possible ideas on staycations compiled by Stephanie Toby from Zion's Bank.
Frugal Tip of the Month:
Even out your Utility Payments

Do you have a high heating bill in the winter while the payment is low in the summer?  Even them out! Many electric and heating companies will work with those who have lived in their place of residence for at least a year, in order to combine the estimated amount of the bill throughout the year to a monthly payment.  This will help people plan how much will be spent monthly on their utilities.

To learn more, talk with your local utility company or visit their website.

How to get Credit Card Spending under Control
Source: University of Wisconsin-Extension

  • Stop carrying your credit cards with you.
This will cut down on impulse spending. If your response is "but I need it for emergencies," ask yourself when was the last time you really used a credit card for an emergency.  Simply by having a credit card with you when you shop, a person is likely to spend 34% more.
  • Develop a plan for using your card.
You'll be less likely to overspend if you set a limit and make a plan for how you will repay the debt you're going to create.
  • Phone a friend.
When you're anxious or stressed, a non-judgmental, supportive person may be able to help you find an alternate solution.
  • Sometimes when people pay off large credit card debt all at once, it creates a false sense of wealth and the debt is built up quickly again.
If that's true for you, paying the balance off over time will give you time to change your spending habits (i.e., pay off single or multiple credit cards over 12 to 18 months).
  • Always wait 24 hours before making a purchase.
A "cooling off" period works especially well with catalog purchases, which may not seem so attractive the next day.

Do you feel like financial stress ever has an effect on your performance at work?  You are not alone, a study by the LFE Institute in 2008 found that 70% of employees today are seriously stressed about their finances and more employees are living paycheck to paycheck and borrowing from their 401(k)s.

Businesses and organizations can incorporate Utah Saves messages and services into their own institutions to help this problem.  If you would like your place of work or organization to be involved as a Utah Saves Site, please call (801) 468-2846 to sign up and get more information.
