Utah Saves Week
What is Utah Saves Week? Utah Saves is part of the national campaign, America Saves, to help Americans save money and to get out of debt. Across the country people will be celebrating the accomplishments of a saving mentality. Join in! On the left hand side of this newsletter are classes and events which will be going on around the state for Utah Saves Week. Participate and enjoy!
But aren't we supposed to be spending due to the economy? Everyone knows the country is going through some struggles. That does not mean we, as individuals, have to strain our budgets to keep the country afloat. Utah Saves is here to promote a healthy, financial life. This means a person uses credit wisely, has a plan of action to accomplish his/her financial goals, and has savings, including retirement and emergency. When people are financially successful it will show through in the economy. So yes, spend if you are financially set and the purchases are good options for you, but don't feel like you have to carry the country through the recession.

to spread the word about saving! As savers, we should be proud that we are getting out of debt and saving money for our future. So proud as to shout it from the roof tops and tell everyone we see.
To help get the word out about Utah Saves Week we have a challenge for you! For every new Utah Saver recruited, you will be entered into a drawing to win a $25 savings bond. For every 50 new savers, 1 savings bond will be drawn. So what are you waiting for... start telling everyone about Utah Saves!

Calling All Savers!
Have you been denied credit for no good reason?
Maybe your foreclosure process had gotten out of hand?
Has your credit card interest rate suddenly increased?
Utah Saves Week is right around the corner (February 22- March 1) and in celebration of this week, Bill Gephardt from Channel 2 news' "Get Gephardt" and Utah Saves may possibly be teaming up to work on consumer stories.
Are you willing to share your story for a news cast? If so, send us your problems for us to tape for the week long series!

The Saver's Credit
By Preston Cochrane
The Saver's Credit was enacted by Congress in 2001 to help low- and moderate-income working families save for retirement. The saver's credit is a non-refundable tax credit available to eligible taxpayers who make salary-deferred contributions to their employer sponsored retirement plan. By contributing to a retirement plan and claiming the saver's tax credit, the taxpayer reduces the amount of income tax he/she owes to the IRS. Read on ...
FYI: If your household makes less than $42,000 a year, you may be eligible for free tax help! To make an appointment or to receive more information call 2-1-1 or visit utahtaxhelp.org

Frugal Tip of the Month:
Join A Food Co-op
Food co-ops are a great idea to save money on your grocery bill. They supply healthy, quality food at a fraction of the cost offered at grocery stores. Plus they promote community involvement!
Basically, food co-ops allow community members to pool their money together in order to buy bulk purchases from wholesalers and local food vendors. This gives member savings up to 50%. The food is never donated, discounted, or out-dated.
